Sports betting bonuses: the conditions behind the free bet
A sports bonus looks simpler than a casino one: bet, win, withdraw. In practice it has its own set of conditions, and they work differently from slot wagering. Instead of game weighting you meet minimum odds, rules about accumulators, and clauses on which bets count once they are settled. This section explains those conditions sport by sport. It does not rate markets or odds and says nothing about which operator offers what — check the current terms of any offer yourself.
The five conditions that decide a sports bonus
| Condition | Typical wording | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum odds | "Bets at odds of 1.50 or higher" | Lower-odds bets add nothing to wagering |
| Accumulator rules | "At least 3 selections, each at 1.40+" | One short-priced leg can disqualify the whole slip |
| Settled bets only | "Wagering counts on settlement" | Open bets on future events do not move progress |
| Voids and cash-out | "Void or cashed-out bets do not count" | A cash-out resets your expected progress |
| Deadline | "Within 7 days" | Long-term bets may settle too late |
The wording in the table is an illustrative example, not an Irwin term.
Worked example: a free bet versus a deposit bonus
A €10 free bet usually returns only the winnings, not the stake: at odds of 3.00 a win pays €20, not €30. A €50 deposit bonus with 5x wagering at minimum odds of 1.50 requires €250 of qualifying bets (illustrative example, not an Irwin term). The free bet is simpler; the deposit bonus is larger but locks your money until the wagering is done. Neither is "better" in general — it depends on how much and how often you bet.
Why settlement rules differ by sport
Whether a hockey bet includes overtime, what happens to a tennis bet when a player retires, or how a basketball line treats extra time — these settlement rules decide whether a bet wins, loses or is voided, and therefore whether it counts toward wagering. Our sport pages go through the rules most likely to affect a bonus.
Before you take a sports bonus
- Confirm the bonus is for sports, not casino.
- Write down the minimum odds and accumulator rules.
- Check whether cash-out and void bets count.
- Compare the deadline with the dates of the events you plan to bet on.
For casino bonuses the logic is different; start with our bonus guides.
