Football bets and sports bonus conditions

Football is where most sports bonuses get wagered, simply because there are matches every day and markets for every taste. That variety is also the risk: some football markets settle in ways that make a bet void or partly refunded, and such bets often do not count toward wagering. This page goes through the football-specific details worth knowing before you use bonus money.

Settlement basics

Most match markets — result, totals, both teams to score — are settled on regular time: 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs count only where the market explicitly includes them. So a bet on "home win" in a cup tie that goes to extra time is settled as a draw if the score was level after 90 minutes. For wagering, what matters is that the bet was settled as a win or a loss, not how you expected the match to end.

Worked example: odds below the threshold

A bonus requires odds of at least 1.50. You back a strong favourite at 1.35 for €20 and win. The bet pays out, but it adds €0 to your wagering. Had you placed the same €20 on a double at 1.35 and 1.25, the total odds of about 1.69 might qualify — unless the terms also require each leg to be at 1.40 or more (illustrative example, not an Irwin term). Always check both conditions.

Long-term bets and deadlines

Backing a league winner in autumn can be fun, but the bet settles months later. If your bonus must be wagered within a week or a month, that stake is effectively frozen and cannot help you meet the target in time.

Football questions

Do football bets include extra time?
Standard match markets are usually settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties count only on markets that say so, such as 'to qualify' or 'to lift the trophy'. The market's own rules decide.
What happens to a bet if a match is abandoned?
Depending on the rules, bets may be voided or settled on markets already decided. A voided bet usually returns the stake and does not count toward bonus wagering.
Is an Asian handicap half-win counted toward wagering?
Terms vary. Some count the full stake, some only the part that was settled as a win or loss, and some exclude handicap lines that can refund part of the stake. Check before using such markets with a bonus.
