Cashback: a refund worth reading closely

Cashback returns part of what you lost over a set period. Of all bonus types it comes closest to an honest discount, because you do not have to pay in more to receive it. Even so, the terms decide its real value. The percentage, period and payout form at Irwin are set by the operator; below are the clauses to check and how to turn them into euros.

Four questions for any cashback scheme

QuestionPossible answersBetter for the player
What is it based on?Net losses or turnoverDepends on your style — work out both
Over what period?Daily, weekly, monthlyLonger periods smooth out good and bad days
Paid as what?Real money or bonus fundsReal money, with no playthrough
Any conditions?Minimum loss, ceiling, manual claimThe fewer, the better

Worked example: one week, two schemes

Over a week you deposit €140, withdraw €20 and end with a €0 balance, so your net loss is €120. Scheme one pays 8% as real money: €9.60, withdrawable at once. Scheme two pays 12% as bonus funds with 15x wagering: €14.40 of bonus and €216 of turnover. At an expected slot loss of about 4%, that turnover costs roughly €8.64, leaving you around €5.76 on average (illustrative example, not an Irwin term). The bigger percentage ends up worth less.

Cashback and responsible play

Cashback cushions a loss, it does not undo it. If you catch yourself thinking "one more session, I'll get some back anyway", that is a cue to stop. A 10% refund means 90% of what was lost stays lost. Limits and self-exclusion options are on our responsible gambling page.

Restrictions to watch for

Checking the cashback you received

Export or screenshot your transaction history for the period — deposits, withdrawals and closing balance — and apply the formula from the terms yourself. If your figure and the credited amount differ, send the calculation and screenshots to the operator's support. If the cashback came as bonus funds, its turnover works exactly like any other bonus; the method is on the wagering page.

Cashback questions

Is cashback calculated on losses or on bets?
Most often on net losses over a period — deposits minus withdrawals minus remaining balance, or stakes minus wins. Some schemes pay a share of turnover instead. The formula in the terms moves the amount more than the percentage does.
Does cashback have to be wagered?
That depends on the promotion. Cashback paid as real money can be withdrawn immediately; cashback paid as bonus funds needs turnover. For valuing the offer, that is the key difference.
Can I get cashback while another bonus is active?
Many terms exclude bets made with bonus money from the cashback calculation, or pause cashback while a bonus is running. Check this clause if you use both kinds of offer.
